How to introduce the gospel?

by Ric on March 26, 2012

We were given a beautiful lesson on how to start a conversation so you can introduce the topic of the gospel.  This lesson was given to young men 16-18 years of age.  I wondered how they would do in a situation which they were not comfortable with.  In dealing with youth it is important to remember, how do I say it, the confidence they have.  Some more than others.  Future missionaries were put to the test and some went down like a rock and some passed with flying colors.

We had them each act like they were a missionary and as the investigator opened the door they were to find something with which to start a conversation and to tie this item to the gospel in some way.

We had the following clues.

  • Ford Mustang in the driveway
  • Garden in the backyard
  • Soccer ball in front yard
  • Police car on street
  • Golf glubs on porch
  • Crusifix hanging on wall
  • Memorial wreath in living room

How would you have used these items as a segway to introduce the gospel to someone you did not know.  Here is how it went down.

Ford mustang-  The youth would relate how their grandfather had one growing up.  How they loved having the top down and the wind in the hair.  This led to a conversation about how the youth was glad he would be able to see his grandfather again someday.

Garden in the backyard reminded the young man how the Lord starts everyone out as a seed and as we are nourished, we grow into adults to teach others about the lesson we learned.  As we are cultivated the Lord makes us better.

Soccer ball reminds us of families and how we can be together agian.  Sports are a great events to get to know others.

Police car on street.  Led to the owner talking about how they were away from their family.  Also about all the bad things there were in the world.  How we could, by being good, live with Heavenly Father again.

Golf clubs.  Sports again.  This person traveled frequently and felt detached from the world.  He could find purpose by going to church and serving others.

Crucifix on wall.  Were able to find common values between us and them.  How we could add to what they already knew about the gospel.

Memorial wreath.  Were able to talk about death and reuniting families together again in the next life.  Comfort which comes from knowing they will be together again.

One of the most important things you can do is care and look for ways to serve the individual.  They will know of your love of the Savior by your actions.  Serving them is serving Him.

Hopefully you can look for common items in someones home to be able to strike up a conversation about your love of the Gospel.  There are people everyday afraid to ask hoping you will help guide them to the right answers.  I believe this is why there is such an explosion of people in the preparedness and spiritual community right now.  People want answers and they want you to be able to provide it for them.  They are looking to you as a leader and as someone they can trust.  Be that person.

Quote of the Day

by Ric on February 23, 2012

Our focus should be on righteousness, not recognition; on service, not status.  The faithful visiting teacher, who quietly goes about her work month after month, is just as important to the work of the Lord as those who occupy what some see as more prominent positions in the church.  Visibility does not equate to value… When we understand why we serve will not worry about where we serve.

1-We are all enlisted

February 15, 2012

As I was thinking about what to write for the first post,  I didn’t know where to start.  What am I trying to accomplish here?  What am I trying to do?  I heard a talk in church and the speaker references Elder Hollands talk on “We are all Enlisted“.  I knew this is where I [...]
